Envirornmental management in Mount Athos

Climate Change adaptation and mitigation

Specific objectives

  1. Reduce vulnerability to CC related disturbances, with focus on wildfires
  2. Increase ecosystem resilience against CC related stresses (droughts, diseases, pests)
  3. Inform and implement (a) strategic adaptation planning in order to reduce CC associated risks as well as (b) mitigation actions so as to improve carbon sequestration (carbon removals and carbon storage)
  4. Assess and model the effects of adaptation and mitigation management practices of the project on wildfire behavior and carbon stocking respectively
  5. Prepare the grounds for the institutionalization of environmental management in the project area of MA in light of CC

6. Disseminate results and best practices of the project both at a local level (Athos monastic community and local stakeholders), as well as within other monastic communities and sectors from EU

7. Safeguard the overall performance of such an important cultural and environmental entity, without disregarding the currently existing administrative and environmental management culture

8. Build partnership with a similar cultural entity (MOS) so that (a) LIFE STEMMA approaches on forest, agriculture and water management may there become applied in a specialized manner under the frame of CC, but also that (b) MA learns from well-developed agroforestry systems functioning in MOS

A strategic and sustainable environmental management in Mount Athos

climate objectives

Strategic adaptive management actions in MA include managing forest and agricultural land and harvesting/storing rainwater for multiple uses, to maintain and protect healthy,
effectively functioning and stable ecosystems. This is a way to build up ecosystem resilience against CC and specifically contribute to the prevention of CC induced disasters, such as wildfires.

climate objectives

Enhancing resilience to the impacts of CC also means investing in a low-carbon economy. The project deals with working on a shift to silviculturepractices according recent EU Regulation 2018/841 ‘on the inclusion of GHG emissions and removals from LULUCF sector in the 2030 climate and energy framework’, with the view to contribute to CC mitigation through actions that result in reducing GHG emissions, increasing GHG removals and carbon stocks (sinks and reservoirs).

The project primarily falls under the priority area of CC Adaptation, however, also seeks to integrate actions that relate to CC Mitigation through demonstrating an integrated management approach for CC adaptation and mitigation, implementing effective CC adaptation and mitigation actions, facilitating the implementation of such actions at a local level and contributing to replicability of these actions elsewhere in Greece and Europe.
